REBUILD LINEN BLOCKS ON GROVE STREET RESTORATION PROJECT

Visit our six stunning retro neon signs illuminating downtown's Rebuild Linen Blocks on Grove Street

The installation of six historic neon signs, integrated as public art into Rebuild Linen Blocks on Grove Street, a  project by Capital City Development Corporation (CCDC) lit up the street with a public LIGHTING CEREMONY, Wednesday, October 30, 2024. The restoration  of the signs had begun in mid-June. Rebuild Linen Blocks on Grove Street is a CCDC funded  project making community-driven infrastructure and place-making  improvements along Grove Street between 9th Street and 16th Street. The  Signs of Our Times historic neon sign gallery is located on the north side of Grove  Street between 12th Street and 13th Street.

Capital City  Development Corporation (CCDC) is the redevelopment and urban renewal  agency for Boise, Idaho, founded by the City of Boise in 1965. Today,  CCDC is a public redevelopment agency serving as a catalyst for quality  private development through urban design, economic development, and  infrastructure investment with a goal of igniting diverse economic  growth, building attractive urban centers, and promoting healthy  community design. www.ccdcboise.com.

A look at the progress of the Blue Bell Auto Park Sign - One of six signs in the Rebuild Linen Block

The Blue Bell  Auto Park opened sometime in 1932 or 1933. First officially listed as  the Blue Bell Tourist Camp, it served as both a permanent and  semi-permanent home for travelers and Boiseans. Tourist camps provided  an area for travelers to stop for respite as the advent of the  automobile allowed for more recreational travel cross-country.

Stored by our  friends at Yanke for several years, the sign started its restoration  journey in stops and starts. The 'can' needed repairs and a whole lot of  loving care before it could be sanded, repainted and given over to the  masters at Classic Design Studio. That gorgeous,  rich new coat of paint and marvelous lettering sets the stage for the  carefully bent neon lettering from Rocket Neon.

CUB TAVERN RESTORATION PROJECT

Original Cub Tavern sign to be placed on downtown's Smith Block

Originally built in 1905, the Smith Block Building, located at 1015 Main Street.  The first-floor retail space will be renovated with the exterior of the building into a bar/tavern.  Restoration work includes brick and sandstone restoration, parapet wall work, new windows, new retail storefront entry locations and historically accurate awnings.

Plans from Smith Block, LLC owner, Jade Stacey, include marrying two important pieces of Boise history and bringing them together in a new location. The bar will be named “The Cub Tavern” after the original location on Capitol Boulevard, currently where Bar Gernika is located.  The Cub Tavern was at this location from 1948 until the mid 1980’s.  The original neon sign, restored by Classic Design Studio and Rocket Neon as a contribution to the project, will be taken out of storage and adhered to the front of the Smith Block building.
